There are a number of reasons why someone may use a stoma, including Crohn’s disease, obstructions to the bladder or bowel, or some forms of cancer. They allow waste to be diverted out of your body if this is not possible by natural means.

Healthcare and support workers who work with people with a stoma need to understand everything about them in order to follow best practices and provide optimal care.

Our stoma care training course gives delegates the required knowledge and skills to provide care and support to individuals who have a stoma, and may require assistance in maintaining both its hygiene and appearance.

The Importance of Stoma Care Training

Living with a stoma is difficult, and many people require regular assistance. Others may be capable of managing their own stoma, but for various reasons are facing issues or aren’t doing it properly.

In either case, a healthcare professional or support worker will be needed to remove, replace, and dispose of a stoma appliance. This is more complicated than it seems on paper, and there are a few different types of stoma, so identifying it and acting accordingly are both necessary.

Our comprehensive stoma training course covers all of the methodology required in stoma care, as well as important information about the stoma itself and its usage.

Our Stoma Care Training Course

Our stoma care training course is designed for registered and non-registered health, care and support workers looking after those who have a stoma fitted. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of what a stoma is, the practical skills to provide stoma care, and relevant context surrounding it.

Understanding methodology is important, a healthcare worker who understands how to change a stoma and dispose of it safely will get the job done. However, if your goal is to provide the best care possible, you need more than just the correct techniques.

Living with a stoma is difficult, and many people struggle with the stoma care they receive. As it is a very personal issue, discretion and sensitivity are both crucial. If someone who work with has recently had a stoma installed and is therefore still getting used to it, you should also be able to communicate its usage clearly so that they can adapt.

Person-focused care is often overlooked by similar courses, so we’re proud to focus on this aspect of care, and it will help both your team and the service users themselves.

Summary and Evaluation

This mix of methodology and relevant context provides the best learning experience possible. Some courses focus too much on relevant technique but leave learners clueless about the stoma itself and what its purpose is.

We want our courses to be as comprehensive as possible, making it ideal for professionals with a range of experience and previous training.

With this in mind, the course will be delivered by one of our expert trainers who will have extensive experience in stoma care. Through this, you can be confident that your organisation is up to date and competent in best practices related to stoma care.

We never let our courses become out of date, constantly updating them as new research or advice from governing bodies is released. This means that your team will be at the forefront of stoma care, something that will support both your organisation and each individual’s career prospects.

Stoma Care Training Course Assessment

On completion of the stoma care training course, we will provide the necessary competency proformas required to ensure safe and evidenced-based clinical practice. This will then allow the registered provider to ensure mandatory competency assessments are completed within the workplace by a nominated mentor/supervisor.

If you are unable to allocate someone to complete the competency assessment, or would prefer to bring in someone from outside of your organisation, we can send one of our registered nurse trainers to help you.

When the course is complete, learners will receive a certificate stating that they have shown competency in stoma care. This is useful in three ways. First, your organisation can provide better care for service users. Second, you show the world that you are passionate about improving the level of care provided. And third, your team members will be more eligible for promotion or can take on more roles within your clinic, hospital, or care facility.
