What are the indications for oral suctioning?

Indications for Oral Suctioning and the situations in which your patient requires suctioning are fairly obvious. They include any form of airway obstruction, such as: Excessive secretions (mucus, phlegm, saliva) Blood, tissue, or teeth from traumatic injuries.

What is Oral Suctioning Training?

This suction training is aimed at anyone working in a care or nursing environment where suction is required. Delegates will learn the theoretical and practical skills required to safely carry our oral suctioning on a patient.

Who needs oral suctioning?

For oral suctioning, a hard-plastic tip with a handle called a Yankauer is usually used to suction secretions in the mouth. Oral suctioning is useful when your child is unable to remove secretions by coughing (for example, they have a weak cough) or they are drooling because they cannot swallow.

When should you not use suction?

Prolonged suctioning increases the risk of hypoxia and other complications. Never suction a patient for longer than 15 seconds. Rather than prolong suctioning, withdraw the catheter, re-oxygenate the patient, and suction again.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our Oral Suction training course gives delegates the skills, knowledge and understanding to carry out oral suctioning on patients and service users in their care. The main purpose of oral suctioning is to help maintain a good airway, improving oxygen flow by removing and build-up of secretions such as vomit or mucous.

Our practical and theoretical course in Oral Suction Training will not only equip delegates with the knowledge they need to carry out the practice but will also provide them with an understanding of the legal and professional implications related to oral suctioning. The course will cover a wide variety of modules to ensure delegates gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject area; these modules will explain what oral suctioning is, why and how it is used, the anatomy of the airway, and more.

The Oral Suction training course is designed for registered nurses, healthcare professionals, and support workers working in areas where oral suctioning is required. The course is delivered by our expert healthcare educators. We ensure that all content is up to date and in line with current best practices. In addition to this, we are able to suit the specific needs of your organisation and service users with fully bespoke content and activities.

Guardian Angels Training will provide the necessary competency proformas required to ensure safe and evidenced-based clinical practice following completion of the Oral Suction training course. This will then allow the Registered Provider to ensure mandatory competency assessments are completed within the workplace by a nominated mentor/supervisor.
