Course Overview:

The "An Understanding of Bowel Care" course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills required for safe and effective bowel care management. Maintaining optimal bowel function and managing bowel-related issues are essential aspects of patient care. This course offers thorough training to ensure healthcare professionals can confidently provide bowel care, promote patient comfort, and prevent complications.

Course Content:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarise bowel function and lower GI anatomy and physiology
  • Explain factors affecting defecation
  • Discuss bowel care and constipation assessment and management
  • Explore legal and ethical issues (privacy and dignity, capacity, consent, chaperone, documentation, record keeping, care and support plan directed by specialist etc.)
  • Practice in simulation the safe practice of DRE, DRS, and DRF

 

Course Objectives:

  • Comprehend Bowel Function and Dysfunction: Understand the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system, common bowel-related issues, and factors contributing to dysfunction.
  • Perform Bowel Assessment: Develop skills to assess bowel function, identify abnormalities, and understand the significance of normal bowel patterns.
  • Implement Bowel Management Strategies: Learn evidence-based approaches to manage bowel dysfunction, including constipation, diarrhoea, and faecal incontinence.
  • Provide Patient Education: Educate patients and caregivers about bowel care, dietary modifications, hydration, and lifestyle practices that promote regular bowel function.
  • Prevent Complications and Promote Comfort: Understand strategies to prevent complications like bowel obstruction and impaction, and promote patient comfort during interventions.
  • Collaborate for Holistic Care: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide holistic care for patients with complex bowel care needs.

 

Assessment and Certification:

Participants will undergo practical skills assessments and a written examination to evaluate their understanding and proficiency in bowel care techniques. Successful completion will lead to a certification of achievement in "An Understanding of Bowel Care Techniques."
