Hazardous substances can be found everywhere, both in professional and domestic settings alike. Substances that have the potential to cause harm or even death are rarely more than a few meters away from any given person at any time of day, though are in all cases only ever as harmful as the manner in which they are approached and handled.

A hazard avoided is no longer a hazard – this is the primary, basic teaching of most health and safety training courses. In the case of hazardous substances, the key lies in knowing how to approach, handle, store, use and dispose of a variety of substances in accordance with strict guidelines, which if followed vastly reduce the likelihood of anyone suffering an accident or coming to any harm.

Hazardous substances must be handled with a highly specified degree of care by law, outlined in a strict regulatory guide known as COSHH.
