Buccal Midazolam Training Train the Trainer | Epilepsy

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam training Instructors Course (sometimes referred to as a train the trainer) is aimed at healthcare professionals and healthcare trainers with an interest in furthering their own knowledge, understanding, skill and competency in the training of others in Epilepsy, Seizure First Aid and the Administration of Buccal Midazolam. 

Upon completion of this blended course, instructor / trainers will have the skills and knowledge to confidently deliver their own Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam training sessions utilising our course framework and resources.  

Industry approved and accredited, this course combines epilepsy and buccal midazolam training and knowledge with effective teaching skills and practice to ensure that instructor / trainers can competently deliver training in the workplace. 

On successful completion of our Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam Instructors course, you will be skilled, confident and competent to deliver Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam training that is fully compliant with the Best Practice Guidelines from the Epilepsy Nurses Association (ESNA).

SYLLABUS

The syllabus for our Epilepsy and Rescue Medication Train the Trainer course includes:

  • Unit 1: Epilepsy -
    • definitions, causes, diagnosis, seizure types, management, SUDEP
  • Unit 2: Epilepsy Seizure First Aid -
    • convulsive and non-convulsive, prolonged and clustered, seizure first aid, action, do’s and don’t, recovery position, ABCDE
  • Unit 3: The Administration of Buccal Midazolam -
    • NICE guidelines, preparation and brands available, indications, contraindications, dosages including second doses, administration in line with SmPC, monitoring, when to call 999 for an ambulance, individual management plans -
  • Unit 4: Teaching Skills and Practice -
    • Preparing and delivering a training session
    • Learning resource creation
    • Reflecting on your own practice

This above syllabus is intended to be a brief outline of the course content and syllabus.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Endorsed and recognised by an OFQUAL regulated awarding body, this Level 4 course meets all the required compliance criteria set by ESNA.  Instructors and trainers who pass this course will be qualified to deliver Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam training utilising our Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam course programme and teaching / learning resources which cover:

  • Epilepsy awareness
  • An understanding of epilepsy
  • Seizure management
  • The administration of rescue medication (Buccal Midazolam)

In order to receive our certification, instructor / trainer delegates will be required to:

  • Deliver a micro-teach session
  • Pass a written exam
  • Complete a period of self-directed study and portfolio of evidence
  • Demonstrate the practical ability to teach and administer buccal midazolam

Following the face-to-face / virtual modules, delegates will also be required to submit a portfolio of evidence (including some self-directed study) plus several essay-style questions.

APPLICATION CRITERIA AND PROCESS

Due to the specialist nature of this course, potential attendees are screened through an application process. To be successful you will need to demonstrate:

  • Your care sector experience
  • Two years’ experience of working with individuals with epilepsy
  • Training experience or qualification

We recommend that trainers have a recognised teaching qualification.  We do offer the option of gaining the Level 3 Award in Education and Training alongside the Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam Instructors course should this be required.

WHO IS THE COURSE AIMED AT?

Our Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam Train the Trainer course is designed for those who already have significant experience in this area, and are required to train other members of the team. The course syllabus seeks to advance delegates knowledge and skills, whilst also providing them with the framework to carry out effective training sessions, in line with best practice.

ASSESSMENT AND AWARD

Our Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam Instructor Trainer (Train the Trainer) course provides delegates with the advanced knowledge required to deliver their own in-house training sessions about Epilepsy, and Epilepsy awareness training, Epilepsy Seizure First Aid and the Administration of Buccal Midazolam rescue medication. 

Upon completion, delegates will receive certifications from recognised awarding organisations.

Successful delegates will be awarded the following certifications:

  • Level 4 Award in Epilepsy and Buccal Midazolam Train the Trainer Instruction
  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF) - PTLLS Equivalent (Optional)
